Bharatiya Shanti Udan
Paris, France
Here, the stepped water channels cascade from four sides representing four cardinal directions used for marking a space and finally, joins in a lotus (the national flower of India) pond at the centre.
The journey from the outside to the inner core of the garden, where the pond is located, is going to be a rich experience, as one gradually meanders through green terraces at different levels having trees, shrubs and lawns, seats and benches. The water at the centre becomes a sacred point - a place to reflect and to be with oneself.
The outer skin is an open-to-sky gallery like a Mandapam or, a circumambulatory path, signifying a sacred parikrama, which is also a landscape system punctuated with trees and shrubs. The pattern of light and shade that the overhead pergolas create on the floor, will make the space engaging.
